Top 4 reasons to switch to an electric vehicle
Although debunked time and time again, there are still common myths about driving an EV that may make you doubt making the switch. But if you take a look at the facts, owning an electric vehicle is actually a smart idea. Here are a few reasons why you should consider an EV.
1. It leaves more money in your pocket
A few years ago, EVs seemed to be drawn from the future. Today however, they’re increasingly popular, even though they're still on the expensive side for most Australians. At the same time, current fuel prices are at an all-time high, and running costs for any car in general are far from negligible. If you put things into perspective, an EV might not seem like such a bad idea despite the initial cost of acquisition. The reason is simple. In the long run, you reduce fuel and maintenance costs, but also the running costs that come with being a rideshare driver, such as insurance or specific licenses and authorisations, depending on the state. Here's a simple comparison, based on a weekly travel distance of 1000 km, using average fuel and electric charging prices as of August 2023:
Cost of petrol for a Kia Sportage: $144,5 per week (85l/1000 km x $1.70 per liter)
Cost of charging a Polestar 2 EV: $55.2 per week (138 kWh x $0.40 per kWh)
To support drivers looking to make the switch, rideshare platforms are offering financial incentives, for example increased commissions.
2. EVs can really go the distance
Current models offer enough range to get you through the day, without running out of juice, for example the Polestar 2 Long Range,., which offers 551km. The new Kia EV5 Long Range offers 555km, but if that’s still not enough, there are models out there that come with an impressive 600 km, like the more expensive Tesla Model Y.
3. Charging is easier than you think
When it comes to EVs, range anxiety is very common. If that’s what's stopping you from getting one, think again. The most convenient way to charge an electric car is at home, and it will vary from model to model, but it’ll take approximately 8 hours depending on battery size. You can charge your car during the night, using a normal 230V socket, so it's ready to go the next day. An ever better option is to have a faster, Level 2 charger installed at your home, specifically designed for home-charging at an average cost between $1000-$2500, which is a small investment compared to what you'll be saving. When it comes to public charging stations, according to a report by Savvy, there are over 3,000 public charge points across Australia, with new ones being installed every month. This is great for those who don’t have access to home-charging stations or if you need to charge during the day.
4. Enjoy the unique driving experience
Driving an EV is anything but boring. They’re so different that every trip is a joy, especially in the city.
On-road safety
An electric car doesn’t mean compromising on safety. In fact, some even consider electric cars safer than petrol cars. Due to the fact that there’s no internal combustion engine, there is more passenger-friendly space, plus a lower center of gravity providing more stability. That's what makes EVs some of the best cars for Uber.
No harmful emissions
By driving a car with zero CO2 emissions, you’re directly contributing to lowering the carbon footprint in your urban ecosystem. You don’t have to be an environmental activist to understand the importance of a cleaner planet and a more sustainable way of living.
Enjoy the quiet
It’s sometimes dumbfounding how incredibly quiet EVs are, compared to petrol and diesel engine cars. If you’ve ever been in an EV, you know that it can turn a ride into a full sensory experience. It’s so smooth, relaxed and quiet to drive that it’s a delight not just for drivers, but for your passengers as well.
